Robert D. Brestel, 82, of Callaway, Nebraska, died Saturday, July 23, 2011, at his home in Callaway surrounded by his loving family.
He was born September 19, 1928, at Arnold, Nebraska to Oscar and Mary (Thinnes) Brestel.
Robert was a 1947 graduate of Callaway High School and served his country in the United States Army from 1951 until being honorably discharged in 1953. He was united in marriage to Joyce Whipple on August 2, 1957. Eight children were blessed to this marriage; Mike, Rhonda, Ron, Rod, Steve, Teresa, Jim and Doug. The couple still enjoyed living in the same house they have shared for the past 52 years.
Robert owned and operated Brestel & Sons Lawn Care for many years where he enjoyed visiting with his customers and shooting the breeze.
He was a devoted member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Callaway. He was also a 57 year member of the American Legion, Post #59 of Callaway and a dedicated past member of the Callaway Volunteer Fire Department.
Robert enjoyed fishing, hunting, family vacations, all sporting events, playing cards, putting puzzles together and was a fiesty cribbage player.

Children: Mike (Jan) Brestel of Maxwell; Rhonda (Joe) Haas of Lincoln; Ron (Brenda Sutton) Brestel of Lincoln; Rod (Janel) Brestel of Callaway; Steve (Diane) Brestel of Lincoln; Teresa (Harry Starks) of Springfield; Jim (Nancy) Brestel of Lincoln: and Doug (Michelle) Brestel of Callaway.
Granchildren: Jennifer (Chad) Baney; Ann (Cory) Knafla; Mandy & Jordan Haas; Kayla (James) Bandy; Sara Brestel; Tyler Hottovy; Jessica Brestel; Samantha, Sean, Seth & Sabrina Starks; Chad (Emily) McGuire, Hope, Donny, Bobby & Megan McGuire, Brianne & Brooke Brestel; Jaide & Denton Votaw, Alex, Brady & Tyra Brestel.
Sixteen great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar & Mary Brestel; sister, Elizabeth Mae Brestel; brother, Eugene Brestel; grandson, Joshua Steven Brestel, and a great-grandson, David Baney.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, July 28, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church, 202 S. Morgan Ave in Callaway, Nebraska with Reverend Antony Thekkekara officiating.
Burial will be with Military Honors in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Callaway.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 27, 2011, from 6-7 p.m. with Rosary at 7:00 p.m. all at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Callaway.
Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.
