Fred M. Vollmer, Jr., 87, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Friday, May 20, 2011, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska.
He was born April 16, 1924, at Overton, Nebraska to Fred M. and Jessie (Musser) Vollmer, Sr.
Fred attended country school near Overton and on January 20, 1945, was united in marriage to Geraldine M. Eby at Kearney, Nebraska. Three daughters were blessed to this marriage; Janet, Jean & Janiece.
Fred was inducted into the United States Army on April 24, 1945, and proudly served his country until being honorably discharged on November 28, 1946. He returned to the states and the couple lived near Eddyville from 1947 until 1950, when they moved to the farm. He was actively involved in farming until his retirement in 1989, when the couple moved to Lexington. After his retirement from farming he drove vehicles for Platte Valley Auto Mart for several years.
He was a present member of the First United Methodist Church in Lexington and a former long-time member of Fairhaven Baptist Church where he served on the church board and was a trustee for 27 years. He was a past member of District #17 board of education and a past member of the Farm Bureau.
Fred loved to play pitch, fish, hunt, garden and so enjoyed family get-togethers. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved being around and visiting with friends and neighbors; he never knew a stranger!

Jean A. (Jim) Bowling of Kearney, Nebraska
Janiece D. (Pat) Kelley of Gretna, Nebraska
One brother: Orvel Vollmer of Lexington, Nebraska
Brothers-in-law and Sisters-in-law: Leo (Bernece) Mazanec of Overton, Nebraska; Bob (Clarice) Bamrick of Overton, Nebraska; Verle (Ellen) Eby of Overton, Nebraska; Norma Eby of Overton, Nebraska; Charlene Eby of Overton, Nebraska and Evelyn Weaver of Lincoln, Nebraska
Six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Harley, Myrle, Virgil and Herman; two sisters, Edna Young and Viola Searles and two infant brothers
The family has honored Fred’s wishes that his body be cremated. There will be no visitation.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Lexington with Reverend Tess Hufford officiating.
Private Inurnment will be held prior to the Memorial Service at Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church, the Dawson Historical Society Museum for upkeep of the Fairhaven Baptist Church or the Donor’s Choice.
