Ellen Lorraine Karlberg was born to Ralph & Mary (Lahm) Scoville on August 25, 1927 in Sumner, NE. She attended school in Sumner for 12 years and graduated from Sumner High School in 1944 at age 16. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior while attending Polk Bible Camp. After high school graduation, she attended summer school at college in Kearney. She then taught rural schools for three years. Then she attended Trinity Bible College in Chicago, Illinois for one year. During this time she became engaged to Maurice Karlberg. In that she was still not twenty-one years of age, she had to get parental permission to get married. Ellen was united in marriage to Maurice Karlberg on July 23, 1948. Ellen became a pastor’s wife, serving churches in Minnesota, and Nebraska with her husband. Three children were born to this union: Karen Sue, Timothy Alan & David Wesley.
In 1959 Maurice and Ellen returned to the farm in rural Sumner area. Ellen was very active in her church and community. In 1987 they moved off the farm into Sumner. Some of the highlights in Ellen’s life included volunteering at SEM School as an aid to elementary students. One thing she really enjoyed was making every holiday special for the kids by crafting special treat/gift to give to each child.
